Albert Wendt was born in Samoa and is a member of the Aiga Sa-Tuala. He has written a number of novels, including Leaves of the Banyan Tree, which won the New Zealand Wattie Book of the Year Award in 1980, along with collections of short stories, and several volumes of poetry. Wendt was until recently on the faculty of the University of Hawai'i.
