An Archaeologist on Holiday

Author(s): Brenda Sewell

NZ Biography & Memoir

Increasing age is no barrier to having fun or adventures, a fact well known by archaeologist Brenda Sewell and her husband Eric, who in their 60s and 70s, hiked and bussed and joined tour groups away from the usual tourist destinations. Along their way they met people who invited them into their homes and brightened their lives, bringing awareness of the many facets of the cultures and how apparently, some cultures changed dramatically whilst others appeared unchanged throughout the centuries.

Product Information

Brenda and her school friend Ann came to New Zealand in their early 20s, joined the Auckland tramping club and revelled in the bush, mountains and sea - so different to what they had been used to in Cheshire. They'd planned to return to England after a year or so but this date was constantly reviewed. Brenda and Eric, a tramping companion, married, and at the age of 40, Brenda began studies into archaeology. After gaining her MA, she worked for the Auckland Regional Archaeology Unit, an off-shoot of the Historic Places Trust. Once the children left home, she and Eric began what she terms their 'elderly adventures' - great experiences with people of other cultures.
