Kevin (Chuck) Edwards was born in Thames in 1936, at the tail end of the Great Depression, and just before the start of World War II.

His mother Gwen (nee Read) lived her whole life in Thames.  Her own mother had died when she was just seven and, along with her younger brother, was raised by three strict Victorian aunts.  These factors - the Depression, the war and Victorian discipline, along with the legacy of the gold fields - shaped the characters and adventures of family and childhood life in Thames that are recounted in this book.  Chuck now lives at Wharekaho in Mercury Bay with Jenny, his wife of 53 years.
