Description

New Zealand's North Island has a wide range of world-class mountain biking tracks and Mountain Biking North is a guide to 34 of the best of these rides. Selected by expert mountain biker and photographer Dave Mitchell, they range from straightforward and easy rides close to our urban areas, through to hard and challenging trips deep into the wilderness. Readers will be able to choose from classic rides such as the Karapoti north of Wellington, coastal rides in the Wairarapa, the 42nd Traverse in Tongariro Forest and other adventures in the Central North Island, through to a range of rides in the Hunua Ranges south of Auckland, as well as many more. The informative text and photographs for every trip is integrated with a 3-D Bird's Eye map from innovative Wellington mapping company Geographx, which provide a superb overview of the terrain covered. A sister volume to the best-selling Mountain Biking South, published in 2010, this book is a must-have purchase for any mountain biking enthusiast, whether a beginner or experienced - not only is it a fantastic guidebook, but it also makes an extremely appealing memento for anyone who loves to take their bike off the asphalt.

Author description

Dave Mitchell started mountain biking in 1986 with a group of friends who became the core of the Canterbury Mountain Bike Club. The search for epic adventures started early and continues to this day and has included a 26-day off-road traverse of the South Island riding tracks and trails as close to the main divide as possible, as well as multi-day trips in many other countries of the world. He regularly contributes articles to a range of different magazines and also produces an annual mountain bike calendar of his photography. He lives in Christchurch with his partner Ditte and their dog Tinker. Geographx is a Wellington-based cartographic design and mapping company with a reputation for visualising New Zealand's wild and varied terrain in new and meaningful ways. The company was started by Roger Smith, formerly a geologist, pilot, farmer, amateur botanist and occasional participant in a variety of outdoor wilderness activities. Geographx maps appear in numerous books and magazines, notably the Birds Eye Guide: Day Walks in New Zealand and Bird's Eye Guide: Tramping in New Zealand.
