Travelling Light - Walking, running, cycling & hitchhiking from UK to Australia & New Zealand

Author(s): Tom Elliott

Travel Literature

Setting out from the north of England in July 1962 with only a light pack each and a vague plna of heading south, running friends Tom Elliott and John Robinson were tired of their everyday lives.

In the early part of their journey through France and Spain - including long stretches walking or running - they had no idea that their adventurous spirits would soon lead them in an entirely different direction.

This would involve many months and means of transport as they made their way across the Mediterranean countries then overland through Iran, Pakistan, India and Ceylon before flying to Singapore and on to Darwin.

The Australian outback provided many more memorable encounters that helped to inform a young man's education at the school of life.

By the time he reached New Zealand more than a year after departing his homeland, Tom was reflecting on and assessing the personal significance of his wanderings.  But it was not until much later in life that he decided to tell the story and here it is - well worth the wait.

"All these things that were gifted to me were ultimately a consequence of my refusal to stand still," he writes. "A long, long time ago, when I was a young man in County Durham, England, I got up, got out and just kept moving."
